The 9 Best Family and Inheritance Lawyers in Tbilisi

Updated 21 firms evaluated9 listedServing all of Georgia

Divorce, custody, alimony, a will, or the estate of someone who died owning a Tbilisi flat. These are the firms we would actually call, checked against their own websites, their registered entities and the lawyers they are willing to name in public. Most sit in Tbilisi but take clients across Georgia, and several run a divorce by power of attorney if you are nowhere near the capital. Where we could not verify a rating we left it blank, because an invented number helps nobody. How we rank

What family and inheritance work actually costs in Tbilisi

Georgia is cheap on state fees and unpredictable on legal fees. Registering a marriage costs about 135 GEL. An administrative divorce, meaning both spouses agree and there are no minor children or contested property, costs around 60 GEL and clears in roughly five business days. Filing a contested divorce claim in court is about 100 GEL. None of that is the expense.

The expense is representation. Very few Tbilisi firms publish rates. The one public anchor we found is a fixed fee from EUR 490 for an uncontested divorce handled end to end. From there:

  • Simple uncontested divorce, no children: low hundreds of euros, or nothing beyond the state fee if you file yourself.
  • Contested divorce or custody: commonly quoted in stages or hourly, and realistically several thousand lari once hearings, translations and any expert report are included.
  • Will drafting and notarisation: a few hundred lari for a straightforward estate.
  • Contested inheritance: priced like litigation, because that is what it is.

Add apostille and certified translation on top, roughly 60 to 220 GEL per document depending on turnaround. Confirm every number in writing before you engage.

How to choose

Check the specialism, not the practice-area list

Almost every Georgian firm lists family law somewhere. Far fewer have a standalone page explaining how they run a custody case or administer probate. That page is the cheapest signal you will get about where their actual work comes from.

Insist on named, licensed lawyers

Georgian advocates are members of the Georgian Bar Association and the good ones put their names and licence numbers on the site. If you cannot find out who will handle your file before you pay, that is your answer.

Ask who does the recognition abroad

For most foreign clients the Georgian judgment is only half the job. The rest is apostille, translation and getting the decree accepted where you actually live. Firms differ sharply on whether that is included or billed as an afterthought.

Test the English

Not the website's English. The lawyer's. Book the free consultation most of these firms offer and see whether you get a real answer about Georgian mandatory inheritance shares in a language you can act on.

Red flags

  • No registered entity, ID number, or physical Tbilisi address on the site.
  • A single phone number answering for four differently branded domains, without disclosure. It is not automatically bad, but you should know you are talking to one operator.
  • Guaranteed outcomes on custody. Nobody can promise that.
  • Pressure to pay a large retainer before a written scope of work exists.
  • Vague claims of "hundreds of cases won" with no named lawyer attached.

When you do not need to pay for this

If you both agree, have no minor children and nothing to divide, an administrative divorce is a form and a fee at the House of Justice. A basic will can be notarised directly. Inheritance where there is one heir and one clean title often needs a notary, not an advocate.

Pay for a lawyer the moment a decision has to be argued rather than recorded: minor children, a disputed asset, a Georgian company in the marital estate, multiple heirs, or any cross-border element at all. For property questions sitting underneath an estate, see our real estate lawyers list, and for marriage-based residency, our immigration lawyers list.

Frequently asked

The state fees are small and public: about 60 GEL for an administrative divorce at the House of Justice and around 100 GEL to file a contested claim in court. Lawyer fees are the real cost and most Tbilisi firms do not publish them. One practice on this list quotes a fixed fee from EUR 490 for an uncontested divorce, and that is a fair anchor for the simple end. Contested custody or a disputed estate is usually billed in stages or hourly, and can run into several thousand lari once hearings, translations and expert reports are counted. Treat any figure you read online, including ours, as indicative until the firm puts it in writing.
