What a broker costs in Tbilisi
Nothing, in most cases. The insurer pays the broker a commission out of your premium, so the same policy generally costs the same whether you buy direct or through a broker. PrioGe says exactly that on its site. Acton says its prices carry no added broker commission. A Tbilisi broker asking a foreign buyer for an upfront placement fee is unusual, so ask what the fee buys you.
The premium is the real number. Only the travel side publishes rates: E-COVER quotes visitor medical cover from 2.7 euro a day, so a month sits near 80 euro and annual long-stay plans are discounted hard against that. Health, motor and property premiums are priced on age, vehicle, sum insured and claims history, and no broker on this list publishes a rate card for them. Corporate programmes are quoted after a tender, never from a table.
How to choose
Check the licence first
Insurance brokers in Georgia are licensed by the Insurance State Supervision Service and carry a number. E-COVER, GeoTrust and Magnus publish theirs. Resolution states its registration with the National Bank of Georgia. If a comparison site will not show you a licence number, you are on a lead-generation page rather than a broker.
Match the broker to the risk
The gap between a retail platform and a corporate house is enormous, and both call themselves brokers. Acton, Magnus, E-COVER and GeoTrust exist to sell you a policy in five minutes online. GrECo, Resolution, GS, Calma, PrioGe and Inforce exist to sit down with your exposure schedule. Using the wrong one wastes everyone's time.
Ask how many insurers they can quote
Get the names, not a number. The Georgian market is small enough that a real broker can list them from memory. A broker who only ever comes back with one carrier is functioning as an agent.
Red flags
- No licence number anywhere on the site, and no straight answer when you ask.
- Only one insurer quoted, presented as the best option without a comparison.
- An English summary with no confirmation of which language version of the policy governs a dispute.
- Vagueness about who handles a declined claim. Ask for a name.
- Pressure to bind before you have read the exclusions. In Georgian property and motor wordings, the exclusions do most of the work.
When you do not need a broker
For mandatory motor third party liability the product is standardised and the price barely moves, so buying direct is fine. The same goes for a single short-trip travel policy, where a comparison page is faster than a phone call and the sums involved do not justify a relationship.
Start using a broker properly the moment the risk stops being standard. That means you employ people in Georgia, you own or lease commercial premises, you hold stock, you run vehicles as a business, or you have investors who will ask what your liability cover looks like. It also means any situation where a declined claim would genuinely hurt. That is what you are buying: someone whose commission depends on the placement holding up.
