What a move costs in Tbilisi
Local moving is cheap by European standards and quoted by the job. A one-room move with two loaders starts around 50 to 150 GEL. A two-bedroom flat with packing, disassembly and a walk-up typically lands between 300 and 700 GEL. Loaders alone bill around 40 GEL an hour, and a single van run across the city is commonly quoted flat between 150 and 800 GEL depending on volume and floors. Storage starts near 90 GEL a month for a small unit and scales by cubic metre.
International shipping is a different product entirely. Sea freight through Poti or Batumi, a consolidated part-load to Europe, and an air shipment of ten boxes are three separate quotes with three different timelines. None of them are published, because volume, route, insurance and customs all move the number.
How to choose
Work out your cubic metres before you call anyone. That number decides whether you are buying a van and two men, a groupage slot, or a full container with customs handling at both ends. Firms that do one of those well rarely do all three, and the ones claiming to do everything usually subcontract the parts they do not.
Three things to confirm before you pay a deposit
- The liability cap. Ask what the firm pays per item if something breaks, in writing. Limited liability is normal here. Full replacement cover is not, and transit insurance is priced separately.
- What packing included means. Boxes, wrap and tape are either in the price or invoiced afterwards. Find out which before the crew starts unrolling film.
- Whether they have seen your stairwell. Photos or a video of the lift, the landing and the street outside. A firm that quotes without looking will renegotiate on the day.
Red flags
- A firm price given over the phone with no photos, no inventory and no questions about floors.
- No written inventory. Without one there is nothing to claim against and nothing to declare at customs.
- Cash only with no invoice. Fine for a student move, useless if an employer or a company is reimbursing it.
- Vague answers about import duty on an inbound international shipment.
- A deposit demanded before a written quote exists.
When you do not need to pay for this
If you are moving a studio, ground floor to ground floor, inside one district, hiring two loaders by the hour and packing your own boxes is genuinely the right call. Plenty of people in Tbilisi move that way for 100 GEL and an afternoon.
Start paying properly the moment any of these is true. A lift-less fourth floor or higher. A piano, a safe, a large fridge or anything that needs two people and a strap. A lease handover with a fixed date, where a no-show costs you a deposit. An office with servers or stock. Anything crossing a border, where the paperwork matters more than the driving.
